HEIC to JPG: Convert iPhone Photos Free Online
If you have ever sent a photo from your iPhone to a Windows PC and been unable to open it, the HEIC format is why. Apple switched the iPhone default camera format to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) in iOS 11, and it is now the default on every iPhone and iPad. The format is excellent — HEIC files are roughly 50% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality — but compatibility with non-Apple software remains inconsistent.
Why HEIC exists
HEIC is based on the HEIF standard (High Efficiency Image Format) using H.265/HEVC compression. The same compression technology behind 4K video streaming was adapted for still images. The result is better quality at smaller file sizes than JPEG, which was designed in 1992 when storage was scarce but compression algorithms were primitive by modern standards.
Apple adopted HEIC for two reasons: smaller files mean more photos fit in the same storage, and 12-bit colour depth in HEIC preserves more colour information than 8-bit JPEG — important for computational photography features like HDR, Portrait mode, and Live Photos.
Why you need to convert
Despite HEIC being a better format technically, JPG remains the universal compatibility standard. Common situations where you need to convert:
- Uploading to websites that reject HEIC files (Facebook, Instagram on web, most CMS platforms)
- Sharing with colleagues using Windows 10 or Android (without specific codec installations)
- Opening in Photoshop versions below CC 2019, or in many free image editors
- Including in documents, presentations, or email attachments for broad compatibility
- Delivering client work — always deliver JPG or PNG unless specifically requested otherwise
JPG vs PNG as your output format
The tool supports both JPG and PNG output from HEIC files:
- JPG output — Recommended for most photos. Smaller files, universally compatible. Set quality to 85-90% for excellent results. Quality below 80% produces visible compression artefacts in gradients and skin tones.
- PNG output — Recommended when you need to edit the image further or require lossless quality. PNG files are 2-4x larger than JPG for typical photos but preserve every pixel perfectly.
Stopping HEIC at source
If you prefer JPG directly from your iPhone camera without needing conversion: Settings → Camera → Formats → select Most Compatible. This switches the camera to JPG and H.264 video. You give up some file size efficiency but gain immediate compatibility with all software and platforms.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
Converting HEIC to JPG at 90% quality setting produces visually indistinguishable results from the original for most photo content. JPG at 90% quality with HEIC source material is excellent. Below 80% quality you may notice artefacts in smooth gradients and skin tones.
Why can't Windows open HEIC files?
Windows 10 and 11 require the HEVC Video Extensions codec to open HEIC files natively, which must be installed separately from the Microsoft Store (it has a small fee). Alternatively, converting to JPG is free and requires no installation.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG?
Yes. Select PNG in the output format dropdown before converting. PNG output is lossless — no quality is lost — but file sizes are significantly larger than JPG. Use PNG when you need to edit the image further or when the image contains transparency.
